Over the last decade, the use of CBD for treatments of various conditions has substantially increased. There is plenty of research that suggests CBD helps in dealing with several health conditions including pain, inflammation, stress, anxiety, and sleep disorders like insomnia. Today, CBD is legal in many parts of the world and is recommended by doctors and experts to reduce these symptoms without any long-term side effects. In this article, we will look at how CBD can be helpful in treating the symptoms of insomnia and other sleep disorders. But before that let’s look at what CBD is.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most popular extract of hemp and cannabis plants. Many studies have concluded that CBD can be helpful in treating many physical and psychological conditions in the human body. Unlike its cousin compound THC, CBD does not cause any psychoactive effects on the consumer. Because it does not cause the feeling of “high”, CBD has gained a lot of popularity in the medical world to reap the plant’s health benefits. Due to this, the production and consumption of CBD products have been legalized in several states within the USA and many other countries around the world. Legally available CBD products must contain less than 0.3% THC, which cannot cause any psychoactive effects.
How does CBD work?
The human body consists of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) which is responsible for maintaining several body functions like mood, appetite and sleep. The ECS contains many endocannabinoid receptors throughout the brain and central nervous system. The two primary receptors here are CB1 and CB2. These receptors interact with the cannabinoids naturally produced by the body to influence various functions in the body. Since CBD is also a cannabinoid, researchers found that it can have similar effects as the other cannabinoids in the body. CBD interacts with specific receptors, potentially affecting the sleep cycle of the consumer. Moreover, many studies suggest that CBD is also helpful in reducing pain and anxiety, both of which can interfere with restful sleep. By reducing these symptoms, CBD improves the quality of sleep in the consumer and deals with sleep disorders like insomnia. Let us now look at some of the research on CBD and insomnia symptoms.

What does the research say?
There is plenty of research that supports the use of CBD for improving sleep. For example, this study published in the Medicines journal collected data from June 2016 to May 2018 in a total of 409 people suffering from insomnia. The participants were asked to rate their symptoms of insomnia on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most severe. On average, starting symptoms were rated at about 6.6. These participants were treated using the cannabis flower with CBD potency between 5.7% to 30%. After using cannabis, the average rate of insomnia symptoms decreased from 6.6 to 2.2. The results indicated that the cannabinoids in cannabis decreased the symptoms of insomnia. However, this study was based on the cannabis flower which also contains cannabinoids other than CBD.
In another study from the Permanente Journal, 72 people with poor sleep and anxiety were taken into consideration. The participants had to undergo sleep and anxiety assessments at the start of the study and after the first month of using CBD. Participants were handed 25mg of CBD capsules. The participants going through anxiety were asked to take the capsule in the morning, and those with insomnia issues were asked to take the capsule in the evening. After one month, anxiety scores decreased by 79% in the participants, and sleep scores improved by 66%. These results suggest that CBD helped in reducing sleep difficulties in a lot of participants.
Many other studies also support the use of CBD oil to improve sleep. For instance, a case study that involved a 10-year-old girl with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and poor sleep was treated using CBD supplements. Here, a trial of a 25mg CBD supplement was taken before sleeping, and an additional 6-12 mg CBD was given during the day to deal with anxiety. Over 5 months, sleep quality and quantity both saw a significant improvement.
